🎃 Home Sweet Haunted Home: How Halloween Brings Southern Oregon Together
Home Sweet Haunted Home
How Halloween
Brings Southern Oregon Together
Halloween has always been my favorite time of year. Since I was a child, dressing up as the Bride of Frankenstein, helping neighbors with their haunted house, and later creating one in high school on our front lawn with PVC pipe and black garbage bags, it has always held a special place in my heart. It’s the one day a year where you can dress up and be anything you want to be, without any judgment.
👻 Why Halloween Brings Out the Best in Us
Halloween might be filled with ghosts and ghouls, but underneath it all, it’s one of the most heartwarming times of year. It’s when we walk down the street and actually see our neighbors. Porch lights flicker, laughter fills the air, and everyone, from toddlers in pumpkin costumes to teens in makeshift capes, becomes part of one big community moment.
There’s something about handing out candy or watching kids trade treats on the sidewalk that reminds us of what “neighborhood” really means. It’s simple, it’s joyful, and it’s the kind of connection that makes this place feel like home.
🕸️
If you’re
looking for local fun this October, our valley knows how to do it right:
🌽 Fort Vannoy Farms Corn Maze (Grants Pass) – This one’s legendary. Twisting paths, clever themes, and a stunning riverside setting make it a must-do every year.
🕯️ Historic Jacksonville Ghost Tours – For those who like a good story with their scares, these tours combine history, mystery, and a little haunted charm.
🍎 Local Orchards and Cider Houses – From fresh-pressed cider to caramel apples and farm stands, nothing says October like supporting our local growers.
And of course...
💀 The Haunting on Cherry Wood
Our family’s favorite tradition, and one that’s grown far beyond our front yard. What started as a fun neighborhood haunt has turned into a full-scale Halloween experience known as The Haunting on Cherry Wood. Every scream and every laugh help make a difference. This year, we’re raising funds for the Lahaina fire survivors, a cause close to our hearts.
It’s proof that even in the spookiest season, our community’s kindness always finds a way to shine through. We’re endlessly grateful for the neighbors, friends, and families who show up, donate, and help us turn something fun into something meaningful.
🕯️ At the End of the Night...
When the porch lights finally go out, the candy bowls are empty, and the fog settles in, I can’t help but feel grateful. Grateful for this community, for the laughter echoing down the streets, and for every small moment that reminds me why I love calling Southern Oregon home.
Halloween
may come once a year, but the spirit of connection, that feeling of belonging,
is something we can carry with us all year long.
So, here’s to pumpkin patches, haunted houses, and neighbors who still wave from their driveways. Because no matter how spooky it gets, there’s truly no place like home sweet, haunted home. 🎃
